The long awaited Tier I I-81 Draft Environmental Impact Statement has finally been released. This document has been the subject of much discussion and speculation since VDOT selected STAR Solution through the PPTA process to implement improvements to I-81. Since STAR was selected, the I-81 safety improvement project has polarized the highway construction community with residents of the Shenandoah Valley who do not want to see a 12-lane highway running through the center of the Valley.

The special interests want to run a concrete monstrosity the length of the Shenandoah Valley to expedite truck traffic -- and stick us locals with much of the bill. Thanks but no thanks.

Questions are the order of the day when it comes to the proposed Harrisonburg loop-road project.
Is no-build really an option? comes to mind, for starters.
Then there's the classic If they decide to build it, will the money magically appear?

"I encourage people to call your neighbors and friends and relatives and drag as many of them down there as you can. I also encourage people to remember that no-build is an option," said Kim Sandum, the president of the Rockingham County-based Community Alliance for Preservation, which has led the effort to raise issues with the loop-road project.

While talk has centered on a new connector being linked to a "loop road" around the city, Clarke said, VDOT could choose to make extensive improvements, minimal improvements or no fixes....

Liskey’s neighbor and cousin, Karen Liskey, 43, shared those sentiments, preferring to see improvements to Boyers Road and frowning on a large road far outside the city limits. "I don’t think they need all that," Karen Liskey said.

Depending on whom it is that you're talking to, the Harrisonburg bypass is now part of the Interstate 81 corridor study being conducted by the Virginia Department of Transportation
