Alternatives to the Beltway

CAP has suggested the following transportation priorities as part of an alternative to building a beltway around Harrisonburg. The plan, that was crafted in part by former VDOT engineer Jack Osborne, includes fixing key county thoroughfares, upgrading a set of roads and intersections, adding a few small east-west links to address the traffic patterns of county residents and getting a handle on rampant growth.

  • The plan includes improvements on key local roads such as:
Route 33 from Cantrell Ave. to route 276
Port Road (rt. 659) from Forest Hill road to Rt. 276
Route 704 from Dayton to Rt. 33
Stone Spring Road from Rt. 11 (s. Main Street) to Rt. 659 (Port Republic)
Friedens Church Rd. from the Mt. Crawford I-81 interchange to Rt 276
Pleasant Valley Rd to Rt. 276

  • The plan supports construction of:
The east-west connector from Pleasant Valley west to Route 42
The Stone Spring Road extension to Route 33

  • In addition to a set of road improvements, the group suggests county policies that will ensure safe sidewalks, zoning and subdivision ordinances that preserve green space, encourage the redevelopment of abandoned buildings in the small downtowns, and respect and protect farmland in ag-forestal districts and throughout the county.
