CAP's Comments at the July 22 VDOT public scoping meeting on the Southeast Connector

Public Meetings

Town Hall with Governor Tim Kaine

Attend Governor Kaine's townhall on Saturday and let him know what you think!

Where and When: Saturday, March 25, 10:45 am. Rockingham County Board of Supervisors meeting room at 20 E. Gay Street in Harrisonburg.

Topic: transportation funding.

Format:
The meeting is open to the public. He is likely to give a version of his presentation found on his website and there may be an opportunity for questions from the audience. His purpose is to make a case for increasing taxes for transportation projects, but this is an opportunity to ask him some questions about I-81.

Talking Points
:
* We could save $16 billion if VDOT dropped its plans for an 8-12 lane tolled truckway on I-81.

* The I-81 planning process overturns road planning at the local level. We currently have a Southeast Connector study underway in which citizens rejected a large bypass around Harrisonburg. This very project is revived as part of the I-81 Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for widening I-81.

* Tolls studied in VDOT's I-81 DEIS show rates ranging from $26 to $45.50 for a car to travel the entire interstate in VA and $65 to $113.75 for trucks (p. 3-3 DEIS).

* We want Reasonable Solutions for I-81, which call for spot improvements, staying within the current footprint of the road and no tolls, is a low cost solution to safety and congestion with far less impact on the Valley.

All public hearings will take place from 5 - 8 p.m. At each location, there will be two meetings taking place at the same time. One meeting will be in the form of a traditional public hearing, where people register to speak and then make oral comments in front of an audience. Registration begins at 4 p.m. At the same time, the second meeting will be taking place in the form of a open house, where citizens may come and view exhibit boards and speak with VDOT representatives. The public is welcome to attend either or both meetings and can make comments at both meetings.

* - The exhibit boards will be available for public viewing from 1 - 3:30 p.m. at each location. (Exhibit boards for the April 19 meeting at Turner Ashby High School will be available for public viewing from 1 - 3 p.m. at VDOT's Harrisonburg Residency Office, located at 3536 North Valley Pike (from I-81, take Exit 251 and go left off the ramp onto Route 11.
